I’d like to add some additional rants. In the previous post I focused on my home situation, now let’s talk government bans. As I remember being taught as a school kid, the constitution said we are a free people. What happened? Now, all you hear is “Do this Don’t do that”. Those colorful little “NO SMOKING” signs are popping up all over like weeds in an empty lot. Cities all over the country are banning smokers from more and more places. My city recently passed an ordinance banning smoking in restaurants, bars, nightclubs, bingo halls, and ALL workplaces. One local hospital bans it ANYWHERE on hospital grounds OUTSIDE as well as inside. It’s getting really rediculous and out of hand. I agree with a previous poster who said we’re tired of being treated like criminals. If you look at pollution statistics, you’ll be surprised to learn of all the poison you breathe everyday from the air. Vehicular exhaust, power plants, factories. In my city residents who live near a chemical plant complex are developing cancers at a rapid rate, but the offending plants are denying responsibility. When I drive through that area,there’s always a haze and foul odor, and it’s NOT from smokers. Never mind the chemical plants, lets sock it to smokers instead. Am I missing something,or is there an unfair element here?

I was always taught in school this is a free country. Imagine that. The constitution that the Founding Fathers of this nation devised has been chopped on so much it might as well go in a shredder. Every time you blink a new regulation is born. Yes, I am a smoker- I smoke a pipe, and I enjoy it. I live with two non-smokers,my daughter and her husband,and it has caused discussions between us. This is my home,they moved in after my wife died so I wouldn’t be alone. Frankly, there are times I wish they didn’t. They try to inpose smoking rules on me in the name of “respect” for their dislike of smoke.They want me to smoke only in certain areas of the house away from them. This was MY house to start with, so where’s respect for me? My daughter grew up with my smoking but now she’s a rampant non-smoking bully. She made her husband quit smoking before he married her,now he’s as bad as her. Bottom line: I’m not giving up something I enjoy just to have harmony in the house. They don’t like it- there’s the door.

Exactly… its not JUST tobacco the plant.. its the cyonide the poisons the toxins the tar the smell the unpleasentness. Look you guys are selfish enough to choose to smoke, stop blaming us for making you uncomfortable.. I personally think smoking should be banned everywhere public. Smoke a cigarette at home if you wanna smoke. I have a pregnant wife and boy do i wanna just clock every guy i see puff a huge cloud when were about to walk by. Like one of my favorite actors said once, if you want to jump out a plane without a chute be my guest, but please forgive me if i dont join you.. Its not the weak immune system its the fact that its gross!.. Take that stuff home cause im sure your house smells like smoke anyway.. with your ash-filled ash trays and cig burns in your couch..

I’m also highly sensitive to smoke and get glares when I cough around smoking, even though I can’t help it. I don’t think the point is that nonsmokers who have problems with inhaling smoke are trying to police the personal health decisions of smokers. Even the federal government has conceded that cigarette smoke is a health risk.

Yesss… What you people haven’t realized yet is that we are plotting to kill you all, by smoking outdoors, so you can all choke to death. Mwahahaha!!
Good thing you have nothing against sitting at a camp fire, 2 feet away from it… Probably your lungs are immune to THAT kind of smoke…
Jesus, people! It’s not like we’re aliens spurting cyanide on people! Tobacco is a plant too… And being worried you will die from a faint smell 100 feet away, means you are killing yourselves with stress. Remember… Hypochondria is a somatoform DISORDER. (=that mimics disease or injury that can’t be attested medically, PHYSICALLY)
Look… I always try not to offend non smokers, by taking my smoke outside of their huge personal space… But I’m tired of feeling like a criminal. How about you worry about drunkards beating their wives, or rapists, or something WORTH WORRYING???
I pity your immune systems.
And no, I’m not hating… More than a dog cornered in a dead end by a person with a baseball bat…

Drugstores and grocery stores with pharmacies who let their employees smoke outside the FRONT entrance! There’s nothing like going to have a prescription filled for a migraine or ASTHMA only to find you have to walk through a cloud of smoke (even one cigarette makes a small cloud) because employees smoke right outside the front entrance! At least…..please have the employees smoke at the BACK entrance where customers can avoid the smoke! It’s common sense!

And to “smokie free” , squeezing a pillow is NO substitute for a good smoke. If I’m hurting myself, that is my decision. As far as family and friends, if they are afraid of the smoke or don’t like the smell , then they can stay away. Wouldn’t bother me the least bit. I much prefer to “hang” with my smoking friends rather than have to give it up to be with non-smoking, whining people, family and friends included.

Dr Romero, in answert to your question posed above, it really doesn’t matter to me the length of my life. Sure the government with all the regulations they are putting in place and trying to make people quit smoking is for one reason and one reason only…money! The longer you live, the longer you have to work and pay into the tax system. They make money. Also, if it cuts down on the health care costs, they make money.
I really resent the new taxes being placed on cigarettes too. They are being used to fund SCHIPS or health coverage for uninsured kids. Baloney! Let the parents pay for health insurance just like I did when my kids were growing up. If they can’t afford it , too bad. Should have thought of that before they made the decision to have kids. A condom costs about .50 rather than me now being saddled with paying thousands of dollars to insure their offsprings. I am looking for and am having success with skirting this new tax. I refuse to pay to raise someone else’s kids.

– but also think about your life, dont you want to live a long healthy life and be with your family.?
– as a matter of fact ive had many family members die from cancer, and yet still some of my family members decided to go on with the “trait”, i look at them and honestly there living the most fucked up life, my father never smoked and my mother either and they are as happy as cockadoodle.

This is a supposedly free country. It is one thing to ask for no smoking in an enclosed are, see( common sense), but outdoor? really , how much car vapor, volcano eruptions, cosmic radiation do you suppose we all are exposed to. Mankind is still here, after all these years.You will safety yourselves into a personal prison.There are far too many rules and regulations as it is. Everyone is running around…scared, I am scared, this will hurt, me fat will hurt me , meat will kill me ,flu pandemics, global warming, terrorism, its almost all media hype, studies paid for by the people who want a certain result…really, look around, aren’t there alot more things to be concerned about than whether I have a cigarette in your vicinity or eat one too many doughnuts, or like a certain scent that is stronger than the one you prefer?

I say if you want to smoke then smoke, if you dont then dont. I personally dont, I grew up around it and hated it. My hubby does it but only at work. I say weither you do or dont. be considerate.
when people realize that its not all about them, then things will become clear. I agree on banning smoking indoors, but out-doors give it up. I do agree when its a “kids” area(games, zoos, parks ect.) you should be considerate and take it somewhere else not all parents want that stuff around their kids. I know i dont. People shouldnt be so defencive, but those who choose to smoke (and everyone who smokes chooses to do so, habit or not) shouldnt get so mad about the taxes or banning of cigaretts. Us non-smokers are paying for those doc. bills of the smokers and alcoholics too. So either suck it up or quit.

I have an extreme sensitivity to anti smoking nazis. smoking is indeed nasty and should be banned from the planet so that all smokers are forced to quit. that opinion aside, whenever i hear someone ‘on the crusade’ taking the soapbox to tell us how evil we are as smokers, i tend to think that the person has serious misplaced anger in their lives. a comfortable place for these people to express their frustration: take it out on smokers. its ok, you can bash smokers, they are dirty and self destructive. plus you can feel better than someone. put yourself up on a pedestal of perfection and look down on the nasty smoker. it’s hip, trendy, and there is absolutely no arguement why you shouldn’t. So that’s how i cope. I feel much better knowing that if it weren’t for me and others like me, that a very large (ever increasing) groups of people with low self esteem would have no one on which to look down and take out their anxiety.

trying to enjoy a hike, the beach or the slopes with someone smoking nearby is obnoxious.. as a former smoker I would at least try to not infringe on non-smokers in these places, if only others would do the same..
here in Portland Oregon there is a ban on smoking indoors but now when you walk down a sidewalk, all the restaurants and bars are littered with smokers outside the door.. maybe if there were smoking-only bars and restaurants, maybe that would help curb this situation… there are no answers only complaining from all around..

How about my son’s soccer games?? We were at a game last week when all of a sudden the smell of smoke came pouring over a group of us. We all looked around and saw one of the parents…front and center….puffing away! What a horrible example to be to your child. Both of my children suffer from seasonal allergies which makes their outdoor breathing strained enough as it is!! I just wish smokers would consider the risk to their children. Cigarettes kill. My mother is 60 years old and suffers from COPD and Emphysema. She smoked for most of her life and now must be on oxygen for the remainder of it.

Cpt D. Thanks for your comment…and for fighting for our country. This blog is about the effects of second hand smoking. There is evidence that it is detrimental to our health, whether we like it or not. Secondly, this has nothing to do with political preference or party lines. I wouldn’t be so quick to assume what people’s party lines are based on their lack of interest in inhaling smoke that they would like to CHOOSE not to inhale.

Many have bled for it. But, we have a “I can smell it so ban it?” What gives you the right to decide? How many people die? All of us. Do we ban old age? Ban cell phones? Radiation kills. As a smoker of over 45 years and still in perfect health as attested to by my most recent physical, I am SOOOO damne tired of the whining and complaining by the self rightious Non-smokers. If you don’t like the smell of smoke, then move upwind. If you are overly sensitive to cigarette smoke, I’m sorry but too bad. Learn to live with it.And as far as the restaurantes and bars, I have quit going to them altogether as have all of my smoking friends due to the restrictions imposed. As a result, two of them have been forced to close. And these were restaurantes, not just bars. I guess there weren’t enough do-gooder non smokers to keep them open.
As far as smokers not being intelligent enough to quit, it has nothing to do with intelligence, but more with the realization that it’s a personal choice. If others don’t like it, too bad. Yes , someday I may succumb to lung cancer or emphysema, but everyone dies of something. and,at least I’ll be able to recoup what I have paid into the health care system over the years WITH interest.

can certainly empathize with those whom cite (further) infringing upon what is (still) counted among our ‘inalienable rights’. but!!! (no pun in tended) cigarette smoking is and always has been a public menace, from day-one. the only difference between a heroin addict and a nicotine addict is that taking a hit of the latter remains illegal in most countries around the world. the (sad, sad) reality is that both are deadly drug addictions. wise up ciggys, smoking destroys one’s body from the inside out_ literally. yeah, you have the right to kill yourself slowly primarily because you are addicted and secondarily yer not breakin any laws to do so. but!!! admit it. when cigs were first introduced the gov did not reveal the addiction-forming proposal it really represented. now the gov does. still you want to smoke, and want the ‘right’ to do so wherever you darn well please. don’t you see the insanity of it all? (sigh) still…if you want to continue to ruin your health at least have the humanity not to impact the health of others wo wish not to join in partaking. it really is that simple. the ‘right’ to do something does not and should not override the Common Good, for others and especially for ourselves and loved ones.

We sat in the back seat (unrestrained) of our parent’s cars on trips and at least one adult was smoking some of the time. Many of us have survived to reach middle age.

I would like to see a ban on body sprays…that’s all I can smell now when I walk into a bar. Some of them are truly terrible.

Here in Tucson, AZ people are not allowed to smoke within 20 feet of a public building. It helps, but if you are down wind going into that building, you can still smell it. What is worse is when those smokers come into the building..the reek of smoke. That is almost as bad!

I completely agree and would even go further…if you smoke in your car, roll up your windows! If you can’t stand to smell the toxic fumes inside your car, why would anyone else want to?

Smoking is a very sore subject with me. I had a very similar experience as “A”. My family and I had to deal with inconsiderate neighbors who would smoke all the time and the toxic smoke would come into our house (it was a townhouse). Smoking should be banned in ALL apartment buildings, condos, and townhouse complexes.

It is not simply an “irritation” to other people, it is endangering other people’s health. I’m pretty sure you can’t get cancer or emphysema from overpowering perfumes…but nice try.

I will be VERY happy to see the laws become even harsher for smokers.
Next time you’re stopped at a light, check out the curb for all of those piles of cigarette butts…you can thank a smoker for that.

all people who complain about smoking…are you still driving a fossil-fuel powered car? do you really think cigarette smoke produces more pollution than your car? and as for sensitivity to smoke, why don’t we outlaw anything that might cause an “irritation” to another? overpowering perfume would be my first choice, I am actually allergic to it, but yet I’ve managed to survive thus far without a LAW banning it! do we really want and need laws and regulations concerning every tiny action or choice a person might make?

Wow. First off I don’t smoke but aren’t we awful flippant with the banning of things you don’t like?

I have an idea — if you don’t like the smoke go somewhere else. The entire beach is covered with smoke? Is that the only bar in town? If it was that important wouldn’t there be non-smoking places? (bars, restaurants, etc).

Smoking is already stigmatized and a lot of places (including my state) smokers can’t smoke inside ANY business of 25′ of any entrance/window/etc. so they are forced to smoke outside.

Me, I would like to see internet comments banned.

Oh And I just have to add this. Why are cigaretts legal and not marijana? Just throwing it out there.
And for any one who complains about the taxes smokers pay and health care preminiums, what about the rest of us? Were paying for medacaid that people need after they nearly killed themselves smokeing 30 or 40 years. Or, the cancer they got from second hand smoke for 30 or 40 years.

I had a bad experiance haveing lived with smoker for about 6 years. Before I had allergies, nothing serious. But about 6 months after moveing in, I devoloped new allergies and breathing problems. I was misarbable. And to make it worse, parts of the house were no smokeing was allowed smelled of smoke. But the smokers couldn’t be convinced to keep there smoke away from me or to go outside and smoke. I have sinced moved out and can only hope to recover to better days.

And for those who wonder why I staed nearly 7 years, Its because the people I am speaking were my in laws and living with my husbend and I. They both had extream health problems for years and had become fully disabled. Not wanting to live on there own, my husbend convinced me all of us living together was a good idea. Not so much to say the least.

Smokers are really stupid and find a cop-out in the idea that they have the right to smoke. I had a neighbor( live in a townhouse) who for 2 years terrorized me because he would smoke all day( literally) and it would get in with windows closed or opened. It was living hell and all he had to do was that he has the right to smoke in his house. There’s no such right! You smokers stop it! I wasn’t able to do anything because everyone is scared of lawsuits like mice of a cat. Luckily he moved away and I hope I won’t get another smoker. It made me postpone having a baby( talking about not affecting other people from your very own home). It makes me wonder what long term effects it had on my body. There’s no such thing as a safe level of smoke exposure! Any exposure is demaging.

Smoking is proven to be destructive yet just because it’s still legal( profits anyone?) smokers still twist their mind into thinking it is okay. It is not!

Maggie, first how can smoking in public be invading personal space?? Public is public..not personal space. I pay thousands of dollars in taxes for “public” space..sidewalks, streets, etc. I always try to be considerate with my smoking, yet a non-smoker will walk into my “personal space” to complain about the smoke. Because of tree hugging, idiots like yourself, smokers can’t find decent hotels to stay in these days. I, along with hundreds of other people, have been herded into fenced in areas at sporting events for our smoking pleasure, where you feel at any moment you will be shot at random just for smoking. For some reason smoke blocks my air passages more when I am eating than at any other time. Even though
some restaurants have smoking and non-smoking areas,
you can still smell the smoke all over the restaurant.
And have you ever smelled your hair and clothes after
you leave the restaurant? Whew!! Also, my grandmother
stopped smoking and years later she was diagnosed
with emphezema and subsequently passed away. My dear
friend was a non-smoker and died of lung cancer because her father was a heavy smoker. He died many years before she did.

HELLO PEOPLE! Its all about public safety. Smoking in public is invading personal property. If your going to smoke then smoke in your own private home. Drugs are drugs and i dont want to smell yours. It effects me. Do whatever the hell you want to yourself but dont effect me. do you want me to fart in your face? no right , cause it effects you so i go to the bathroom or my home to do it. and also smokers should not be allowed to do it at a pool or under someones window. do it in your own home. and if you dont like the smell and need to open a window so it goes into your neighbors. well guess what! stop smoking! you can do whatever drugs you want. but do it in the privacy in your own home!

Re: the taxes that smokers pay. Please. I assure you that any taxes that you pay do not begin to pay for the healthcare costs you will incur when lung cancer gets hold of you. The reality is that smoking is a gross, disgusting habit and you all try to justify it because you don’t have the willpower or the intelligence to quit. Do not add insult to injury by trying to rationalize it as a benefit to society. I do not want my lungs polluted by second hand smoke period. OK, I’m all about the freedom. I’m also a non-smoker. Smoking is unhealthy and disgusting! Millions of dollars goes to one poor sap WHEN he/she gets Emphysema, lung cancer or some tragic disease. I think smokers should have to pay extra tax dollars for smoking because they will need extra services for healthcare after they trash their poor bodies. You can have the outside to smoke, but I think it should be done in a square room with no windows built especially for smokers so that you can inhale both the primary smoke and the secondary smoke….more bang for your buck!

I completely understand about non-smokers wanting cigarette smoke to totally go away. However, where do you draw the line?? I’m highly sensitive & allergic to perfume & cologne; so is it fair of me to ask you not to wear perfume in indoor & outdoor public places? For the most part, smokers are trying to be considerate, but all you high & mighty non-smokers just think you’re perfect. Look in the mirror & judge yourself as harsh as you judge us smokers ~ then this world could be a better place!!

Is this guy serious? I got to number 5 of this article before I just couldn’t take anymore of his whining. Being a past smoker, I too have an incredible sensitivity to anyone smoking around me and sometimes find it annoying just like all the other nonsmokers do. However, just like it is the author’s right to drive his air-polluting vehicle or wear a speedo in public, other non-polluting or non-fashion-challenged citizens must put up with it. For some of those smokers, a cigarette is one of the only pleasures they have in their life. So, please have a little more tolerance…we are all doing the best we can.

I agree with Dr. Mayank, smoking should be banned.And I also have an extreme sensitivity to smoke. Not only to they smoke to look cool but most of the people that I know who smoke all say that it helps with stress, and I not only disagree with that to the fullest, I don’t understand why the first thing the do is lite up a cigarette to eliminate stress. I think that smoking to eliminate stress is a bunch of baloney, not only have I lived with smoker just about my hole life, I also was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 14 and having epilepsy or any other disability very stressful you don’t see many people with disabilities smoking, therefore smoking does not eliminate stress!!!

Non-smokers have already have it where smokers can’t smoke in any public buildings. It really is kind of bad when you all are plotting taking the outside away from them also. Tell me where you think a smoker should smoke. Oh and while your at it look at the taxes smokers pay. Now think if we all quit smoking how do you think that would affect the economy.

smoking shud be banned on this earth…it will improve lots of people’s life n quality of living…people think that dark n hazy lungs are todays trend..n they look cool….bloody loosers (excuse my language)

Agree to banning smoking in all those places, though I can’t relate to ski slopes as I’m from a tropical country, hehe.

I’d like to add CHURCHES to the list — at least here in the Philippines!

See, during Sunday masses, parishes here are usually overflowing with people that some end up attending mass in the church’s peripheral areas and parking lots. Can you imagine people smoking WHILE attending mass, simply because they think they can do so since they’re “outdoors”?? It’s insane! I’d love to smell sacred INCENSE during mass, not cigarette smoke!

(BTW, I am (sadly) quite a heavy smoker. But I do not smoke in places where I know there are a lot of non-smokers, or where there are pregnant women and children around. At dinners with friends, I always “dictate” that we eat in the non-smoking section, even if the non-smokers are “outnumbered”. I’m a “weird” smoker, hehe.)

I agree wholeheartedly! My biggest pet peeve of the bunch is on the ski slopes. It drives me bonkers. Although, running the Chicago Marathon and having to chug through clouds of cigarette smoke was almost as bad.
