The key to being healthy and fit is consistency. Do a little every day. You don't have to go to the gym for a workout. Doing laundry and housework is working out. Just kick up the intensity. If it normally take you 30 mins to vacuum then try to complete it in 20 mins which means that you are going to have to move quicker and burn more calories. Any task that you do on a daily basis, kick it up and you will get in great workouts while completing your daily routines. Just do it--be consistent--give it your all. Increase the intensity until you find you have more time in your days and then add in a workout video or two.

You know this article is totally correct. My family used to be out of shape and after my grndpa died from a hearat attack we realized that we needed to work out more. I was the only fit person in my family. All it takes to stay in shape is a light jog adn some walking everyday. My mom has two kids, a house to clean, a bad ankle and knee, food, to cook, and people to look after; but she still manges to work out a little every day. I see mothers jogging with their babies everyday, struggling to get in shape again; and think good for you! they a busy and they still make the time so they can stay healthy.

Excersing isn't the most fun thing in the world to do but it has it's obvious benefits...I'm 47 and excersing in some form has been a part of me ever since highschool. What I like most is when I see my highschool class mates and how fat and outta shape they are, I thank Heaven for this thing I've stuck with...it helped me get thru my divorce as well...sweating is good, plus when my old classmate say that I look okay, it tell me I've done something right..Now maybe I'll try marriage again..

I have been reading everyone's excuses. You need to also look at the benefits of exercising! If you feel tired all the time try exercising it will boost your energy level. Involve your children take them with you for a walk around the block! Many gyms offer day care programs for children. Leave them with the sitter for 1 hour while you work out. Or perhaps, play sports in the yard with the kids, take the family bike riding..? You need to make time and be creative about it! If you live in an area that is warm, try swimming as an activity. You will feel 100% better about yourself, live longer and avoid many health problems. Yes it is expensive to eat healthful but look at how much more costly it is to be constantly sick and require loads of medical attention. Also, you need to be a good role model for your children. The pattern of terrible eating and no exercise will pass on to them. Get creative and make time! Trust me you can!

I hold a full time job and go to grad school in the evening. I still have time to go to gym in between or after I am done with classes. I am not an addict, but I know what it means being healthy.
I totally agree with what Brett said, doing a little is way better than not doing at all. You don't have to look like Arnold...just feel good for your self.

people please eat healthy and exercise......there is no escape.

I think negative and nonconstructive comments towards replies are incredibly immature. Why even take the time to attack people? Instead of spending time being an online blowhard, you could be out exercising or being useful to your fellow man. Get a life.
Everyone has lazy times. It is great to have a workout partner or loved one to kick your butt in gear. It's much easier than struggling against self-doubts and bad self-esteem alone. Get a workout buddy and follow Brett's advice.

Lots of hostility and judgement from the self-appointed fit towards those who confess they struggle with weight and finding time and ambition to exercise...especially from men towards women. There's a pretty broad range between not in perfect shape and morbid obesity. Not such a wide range between keeping in shape and being smugly obsessed with one's physical prowess, evidently.

Hey Brandy how about having less kids?
You are just making excuses. In 6 years when you get obese and your hubby no longer wants to get intimate with you you'll wish you had.

What's the point of having a hot body if you're skipping out on your social life to go to the gym?

If working out was easy, everyone would do it. Therefore everyone would have an attractive body and noone would stand out. Maybe if it was easy and everyone did it, society might start to view overweight people as attractive since it wouldnt be the norm....who knows. Anyways, I hate working out. On top of the fact that I do it every morning for the Army, I also do it every evening on my own. Its called will power. Its choosing what you eat wisely, its not sitting down when you get home from work and just going straight to the gym, its skipping a group party to get that 5th day of the week in the gym in. There are sacrifices.

I am a 42 year old mom with a professional career, husband, etc. When my kids were smaller I spent hours walking while pushing them in a stroller. I never considered this to be exercise and never scheduled this in..I kept weight down and felt great. Now that they are older and need to be driven places, I try to stand and watch their events and walk while I wait. I recently discovered a love for golf and fit in a size four golf skirt. Everyone should get up and move!!

I used to say I don’t have time.
You first need to find the type of exorcise that fits with your lifestyle. Then you need to make it a priority.
I jog for about 30min. 6 days a week. Its become something like brushing teeth to me. when I get home from work, I slap on my sneakers and hit the pavement. I would much rather take a nap or read a book but that doesn’t prioritize over my health and appearance.
For the single mothers with children, look into the children’s programs at your local YMCA, while the kids are with a trained instructor getting their own exorcise (which is just as important!) you can be doing your own work out. Make it your time to yourself and you might even enjoy it.

I am a law student in South Africa. I am currently employed at a law firm from 08:00 to 16:30. I however leave work at 16:15 to be at class by 16:30. I then have class till 21:10 three times a week and the other two days till 19:45. I live close to the gym and to varsity. so ont the three days i have late class i hit the gym early mornings and the other two days after class i rush home, grab a apple and in the gym from 20:05 till 21:00 (closing time). There is really no excuse for not training. Once you are in sync with your training schedule, nothing should come in between this relationship.

wow i am appalled that there are people who, after reading this article, can still have the guts to say "no , sorry, i don't have time" there is always time. do calve raises as you cook, abs while you watch t.v, stretch in the shower... speaking of t.v, instead of watching a mind-insulting show, why not take that time to do a work out? sheesh, no wonder there are so many obese people in this country. who by the way, can't seem to stop crying about how unhappy they are with their looks and bad health, and who CONTINUE to find excuses for it. Rather than saying, "yes, i am a fat lazy unhealthy person, and no one is to blame but myself. And if i really wanted to, i could find time to exercise. " Take a little more pride in yourselves people!

Just a thought - if someone is having a hangover or is sick, there's a good chance dehydration is involved. Getting sweaty could be a bad idea at that point!
Otherwise, great article. For all the naysayers.. yes, it is difficult, that is the point. Try.

REALLY!!! Is it that hard to carve at least 30 minutes out of your day to work out. I loathe working out the entire time, treadmills are monotonous and I always feel like I'm on display. However, I still manage to go at least 4 days a week even though I'm a college student with 22 units, a part time job working 25+ hours a week and taking care of housework and cooking for my husband and myself. You have time; you just have to put in the effort.

I'm a 50 y/o male, always been in good shape. Two years ago I just got lazy and stopped working out. I really didn't feel much different for the first year, then I began to notice subtle changes, my energy level had decreased, had more trouble going up multiple flights of stairs, my joints were stiff when I woke up, etc. I went in for my annual check-up and found out I was pre-diabetic with elevated blood pressure. I had never had any problems when I was in shape. I immediately cut out all junk food and sugar, re-instated my gym membership and got to work. Now six months later, my blood pressure is normal as is my blood glucose-with no medication. I will never again allow myself to get lazy or make excuses for not exercising. It isn't worth destroying your health.

Brandy Blain sounds like the typically overweight housewife who blames everything but herself on reasons why she can't exercise. I work full time and go to the gym three to four times a week for at least two hours, so don't tell me your too busy. Brandy, your leaving out the time that sit around watching TV while the kids are at school in between your days of total housework? How about instead of watching Oprah, you try a exercise video. Btw, who the hell has to do housework all week. You actually can't go workout for at least hour? I am sure you go shopping for a hour. Stop making excuses. Come on. That's why this country is obese. Get the food out of your mouth fatties and go walk somewhere.

I'm a 42 year old married working mother of 3 young boys. I used to come up with every excuse, namely the ones you brought up. Finally a year ago, I started a new job and one of the perks is a free gym membership to a gym across the street from our building. Instead of eating out over lunch, I started working out 4-5 times a week. In the past year, I've dropped 27 lbs and look better than I have in YEARS. The bottom line, you have to make time. In the long run, it makes you a better wife, mother and person.

i have to admit, i would love to work out but nowadays i'm just too busy to even bother. between my job, my two small children, my small nephew, and a household that i must maintain i already don't get enough sleep and everybody knows that you need to get the right amount of rest if you're going to be fit. i do make the attempt from time to time by taking the kids out and running around with them that's got to count for something.

the.switch: you are correct...sweating helps us regulate our body's temperature. I wouldn't say I'm 'spreading a myth to help myself feel better about sweating.' The reality is, I have no reason to feel better about sweating...there is nothing wrong with it. Some sources believe that although your kidneys and liver take care of most toxin removal, sweating also can contribute to some removal as well.

Although the article isnt bad, and contains some good points, I wish people that write these columns and blogs would quit saying that sweating removes toxins from the body. Don't these people, who purport to know something about the human body, know that the liver and kidneys remove almost all toxins from the body and those that arent removed by these organs are passed into urine and feces? the function of sweating is simply to regulate body temperature, and in fact, if someone sweats too much, the body's ability to remove toxins is actually impaired. So please....brett...quit spreading this myth in order to feel better about sweating.

I agree with the "making the time" idea very well. It has to be a priority as does a proper diet. I won't work a job that won't accomodate my healthy lifestyle. Obviously not everyone can have that luxury, but it really only takes an hour to get a good full workout, and yes that includes drive time. I work out at lunch and eat at home afterwards every day. Keeps me out of the fast food realm and it is WAY cheaper to eat at home and healthy by far. Just do it. The long term and short term benifits outway the pain. BTW I have 2 jobs, a house I work on all the time, and I still have time to socialize a little. No Sacrifice, no Victory!

Doing exercise after coming from work feels great.
the problem I have nowadays is that I feel exhausted because of my thyroid problems.

it's not an excuse, I still manage to jog 3 times a week, but it's very difficult.

Would love to have more time to exercise - but I have a business to run - put about 80 a week in and work a parttime job bartending 2 days a week - I'm so exhausted on my one day a week off - I work at full steam to get laundry and house cleaned on that day - no social life either - plus I have a bad left hip and recently broke my left ankle - so even walking is a little difficult - so I know people make a lot of excuses for not exercising but some of them are true!

Brandy, I hear your pain. It isn't easy is it? Three kids can be enough of a workout! And yes, today especially, food isn't cheap...especially healthy food. My philosophy is to do the best you can. Being mindful of being balanced is better than not caring. Even if it means making one less trip to a fast food restaurant a week...it is a step in the right direction. I don't think being balanced is ever completely achievable. There ALWAYS are things that keep us from maintaining a healthy balance. It is TRYING that is what is important!

Sure I want to work out, and get healthy, but how about three kids at home, and a husband that is either in a war zone or training to be in one? I spend my days keeping up with laundry, and makeing sure I can walk from the front door to the bathroom with out breaking my neck. The last thing I care about is working out. It's too hot where I live to walk outside, unless I get the whole house up at the crack of dawn, and there is no where to put excercise exquipment in my home. Never mind the fact that eating healthy isn't cheap. What's the point in working out if you can manage a well balanced diet too?

My favorite cure for a hangover isn't orange juice, omelets, ibuprofen, or sleeping on the couch. It's hitting the streets for a run. Sweat out the bad stuff...
