For staving off hunger, you should also consider mixing in some Soy Protien based powders for your shakes.

Whey is very fast "acting" (i.e. absorbed) into the body. This is why it is ideal for a post work-out protein.

Soy however, is absorbed at a much slower rate, and can help keep your nitrogen balance higher for longer periods of time. Most mfgs make a protein "blend" powder (whey/soy/milk..etc..) which is probably better for meal supplementation than post-work out.

Plus, soy, when mixed, with juice/water...I find tends to be creamier in consistency, and not lump as easily as whey.

Guys, forget what you have heard about soy and its relation to female hormones, etc...

After a late night workout, for muscle repair/replentishment/growth, I like to know I have lots of available protein (i.e aminos) flowing through my bloodstream while I'm sleeping. Soy will faciliate this condition better than whey.

OK...so I was going to avoid posting all the nitty gritty about kinds of protein. In short, Isolate is best post-workout and concentrate is best for during the day. Whey Protein in general is the best protein you can have. It has the highest BV (Biological Value) which means it will promote the most lean muscle gain. For maximum benefits, you want micro-filtered whey at very low temps. Isolates are sub-fractions of whey absorbed rapidly into your system. These are good for post-workout nutrition, but is a poor choice for general supplementation because if the body does not need all the amino acids released into the bloodstream, it will use it for energy and not muscle building. Isolate also doesn't have as many health benefits because the process required to produce isolate destroys some of the sub-fractions.

The thing I don't get about protein - I've been on the whey for a bit, but they have this "whey protein concentrate" and then "whey protein isolate." What's the difference? And does it matter? The dude at the health store told me that it's good to have the isolate in there. And then said, "Well lots of people just say, 'Protein's protein.'" So, which is it?
